Carmine is a rich red pigment used in lipsticks, blushes and eyeshadows. It is prized for its colour and stability. The crucial thing to know is where it comes from: it is made from crushed cochineal insects.

What the sources say

Carmine is an approved cosmetic colourant and is not a safety concern for most people (a small number can be allergic). Its significance for Clarra is the vegan axis: because it is animal-derived, a product containing carmine is not vegan, even if it is otherwise 'clean'.
